و يروي المسلسل مغامرات وحكايات حول الشخصية الرئيسية سبونج بوب وأصدقائه في مدينة خيالية تحت الماء بالمحيط الهادئ اسمها "قاع الهامور"
وقد بدا سبونج بوب ليكون مسلسلاً تلفزيونياً في عام 1996
انتج سنة 2004 فيلم لـسبونجبوب ولم يتم وضع أي عنوان للفيلم سوى The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie
